April 6, 2006 - (Photo 1) Mayor Rod Haugerud was pleased to accept Tourism Saskatchewan's Land of Living Skies Award of Excellence for the CSLP's Eco-Centre from Grant Gayton, President and CEO of PrintWest.

For the 17th Annual Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence, from 113 nominations, an industry selection committee of 12 people determined the 47 finalists and 16 award recipients.

There were three finalists in the Land of the Living Skies Award category. This category recognizes a tourism business that demonstrates innovative efforts to prevent and reduce the environmental impacts of their business operations. The three finalists were: the CSLP Eco-Centre in Craik, SK, the Historic Reesor Ranch in Maple Creek, SK and Shearwater Properties Ltd., a South Saskatchewan River Boat Tour Company in Saskatoon, SK.

(Photo 3) A sculpture by Regina artist, Joe Fafard was presented to the finalist, CSLP Eco-Centre. The award captures the essence of our Saskatchewan tourism industry. The sun and radiant lines reflect our awesome sunrises, sunsets and big skies, as well as the warmth of our people, gracefully depicted within the outline of our province. The geese represent the importance of teamwork. By flying in formation, they share the work and get to their destination more quickly and easily. If one goose falls out of formation, it immediately feels the drag and resistance of trying to move ahead alone. When the lead goose tires, it drops back so another can take the lead, enabling the entire formation to continue moving forward with strength. The award provides the inspiration for what we can achieve by working together. Accompanying the Mayor to the gala affair were: Aaron and Theresa Obrigewitsch, and Shirley and Austin Eade.
